Thought is treated as the crown jewel of our evolution—the higher function that supposedly sets us apart from other species, suggesting that our capacity for reason is what makes us more civilized or advanced. But that assumption itself is worth questioning. It’s a story told mostly from the perspective of Western intellectual history, where abstract reasoning is treated as the pinnacle of human development.
Steven Pinker, a Harvard cognitive psychologist and author of Enlightenment Now, is one of the most well-known defenders of this story—a story that credits reason, science, and Enlightenment ideals with the arc of human progress. And there’s something seductive about that view: it promises clarity, order, and optimism. But even the most elegant frameworks can leave things out—and sometimes, what’s missing matters the most.
So while thinking does matter—and we are exceptionally good at it compared to other species—it’s not always our most reliable strength. Because when we do think, we don’t always do it well. That’s why it’s not enough to simply value thinking. We have to understand what kind of thinking we’re doing, and when. That’s where the distinction between analytical and critical thinking becomes essential.
Defining Analytical vs. Critical Thinking
Analytical thinking is about structure. It’s the process of breaking things down into parts, looking at how they work, seeing what patterns emerge. Take, for example, his core claim that Western civilization has been the primary driver of moral and technological progress. Pinker often highlights the Enlightenment, scientific reasoning, and the philosophical contributions of European thinkers as the source of humanity’s greatest achievements. Analytically, it hangs together: there is a timeline, there are citations, and there is data that can be plotted. But critically, it falls apart.
The history is selective. The narrative suggests a continuous lineage from ancient Greek philosophy to modern Western democracies—but that continuity is a myth. Much of what survived from the Greek and Roman eras was not preserved by Europeans but by Islamic scholars during Europe’s so-called Dark Ages. The rediscovery of classical texts happened centuries later. For example, works by Aristotle, Galen, and others were preserved and translated by Islamic scholars before being reintroduced to Europe through Arabic-to-Latin translations. This long detour complicates the idea of an unbroken Western intellectual lineage. And the interpretations that followed were shaped by political, religious, and colonial ambitions.
Meanwhile, outside of Europe, there were no dark ages. Civilizations in Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia continued to innovate, trade, and expand knowledge. Chinese and Viking explorers likely reached distant continents long before Columbus, and the technologies needed for global exploration—shipbuilding, navigation, metallurgy—were not exclusively European inventions. The key difference? European monarchs pursued domination, backed by theological justifications and imperial ambition.
So it wasn’t superior thinking or superior innovation that launched the colonial era. It was entitlement. The belief that others were less civilized, less rational, less human. Pinker’s mistake isn’t just historical—it’s conceptual. He analyzes clean lines of progress but fails to critically examine the moral and cultural assumptions that shape what gets counted as “progress” in the first place.
This isn’t just a philosophical problem. It’s also a scientific one. Ironically, the defense of the Western world’s domination has been disproven by the legacy of its own Scientific Revolution.

If you reverse time from the moment someone acts—yells, hesitates, forgives, votes—you don’t start in the “thinking” part of the brain. But it means that any worldview that puts rational thought at the top of a behavioral pyramid—like Pinker’s—has the science backward.
Thinking matters, but not because it leads the way. It matters because of what it’s working against: bias, emotion, impulse, identity, and all the invisible architecture of our past experience. If you ignore those layers, you’re not building your argument on reason. You’re decorating your defense.
That’s what makes the Pinker example so important. On the surface, it’s a masterclass in analytical thinking: the argument is clean, the evidence neatly arranged, the tone reassuring. But in truth, we are feeling beings who occasionally manage to think—and not always well. Our choices are shaped by emotion, memory, instinct, and culture long before logic gets a vote. Thinking isn’t the driver of behavior—it’s the narrator, offering commentary after the action has already begun. And like any narrator, it can mislead—telling a coherent story even when the real motives were pre-verbal, embodied, or automatic.
This matters because the quality of our thinking shapes the quality of our lives. Poor analysis leads to brittle systems, flawed diagnoses, and plans that collapse under pressure. Poor critique allows harmful assumptions to pass unchecked. We end up mistaking coherence for fairness, and sounding smart for being right.
Being a good analytical thinker means seeking as much information as possible before and during analysis. It requires humility: an awareness of bias, a openness to revise, and the discipline to let curiosity lead—even when it’s uncomfortable.
Being a good critical thinker means asking deeper questions about power, meaning, and values. It takes more than intelligence—it takes vulnerability and courage. Where analysis reveals structure, critique reveals story. And story is how we make meaning of the world.
This isn’t about maximizing our intellectual horsepower. It’s about integrating that ability alongside the deeper traits of our best selves—emotional honesty, relational integrity, and the kind of wisdom that knows the difference between cleverness and clarity. Clear thinking helps us solve problems. Honest thinking helps us live with them. And that’s the deeper work that allows us to live more authentically.
